About Oatlands
Oatlands is a suburb located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Parramatta City Council area and is situated in the Greater Western Sydney region. Oatlands is known for its residential neighborhoods, parks, and recreational facilities.
According to the data of the 2016 Census, there had been 5660 people in Oatlands. Of these 48.4% were male and 51.6% were female.
History of Oatlands
Oatlands got its name from Oatlands House, one of the first homes in Parramatta, built by Percy Simpson in the 1830s. While some people think the name came from the first oat planting in Australia, it`s more likely named after Oatlands Park in England, close to the lands of Lord Dundas (the neighboring suburb`s namesake).
In 1840, James Bettington bought the land and used it for sheep farming. Now, Oatlands House is an event venue, and the surrounding area is the Oatlands Golf Course, which opened in 1931. Oatlands became its own suburb in 1991; before that, it was called Dundas West.
The local post office was originally called Dundas West but was renamed Oatlands in 1993. In 1997, Oatlands was featured in the opening scenes of the children`s film "The Wiggles Movie," specifically in The Magic Club.
