North Rocks is a suburb in the Hills District of Greater West Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia, 26 kilometers northwest of Central Sydney. Following the 2016 merger of the council lands, most of North Rocks falls within the Parramatta City Council area. Moreover, roads north of the M2 Hills motorway are in The Hills Shire.
According to the data of the 2016 Census, there were 7,965 people in North Rocks. Of these 48.5% were male and 51.5% were female.
The name North Rocks dates back to the beginning of settlement on Parramatta and predates even the name of the town itself, Rosehill. North Rocks (Hunts and Darling Mills Creeks) were originally occupied by the Burramattagal clan (Burra - eels and fish, Matta - a place with running fresh water), which were part of the Darug Nation.
The NorthRocks were a massive sandstone outcrop that capped the ridge on the south side of Hunts Creek. When it was decided in 1841 to build a new prison at Parramatta, a contractor bought The Rocks because it was made of the district`s best sandstone.
His offer was accepted and much of North Rocks was converted into prison walls and slabs in 1844. A post office in North Rocks first opened on February 1, 1894; later that year its name became Forrester, Maraylya in 1921 and closed in 1970. Moreover, when the area was rededicated, one of the many new developments became the Lynwood Estate.
North Rocks also offers Muirfield Golf Club, a scenic 18-hole park-style golf course, and club facilities on Barclay Road. There are also local softball, football, and rugby clubs and the Murri-Yanna Track in Bidjigal Reserve which is accessible from Whitbread Place. Moreover, North Rocks were also the site of the 1976 Skateboarding Winter Olympics.
