After the settlement of the British, the area, of Prospect Hill became the site of the first land grants to emancipated convicts in 1791. The area was later divided into Prospect West of Greystanes Creek and Greystanes East of Creek. The latter takes its name from a historic home on Prospect Hill built by Nelson Simmons Lawson, the third son of Lieutenant William Lawson.
The name "Gray Stanes" given by Nelson Lawson comes from the basalt outcrops on Prospect Hill, "Grey" being its color and "Stanes" being the Scottish word for stone. Moreover, the land was originally granted to William Cummings in 1799 before being acquired by William Lawson around 1810.
The area was used for poultry farming in the early 20th century until Greystanes developed into a residential suburb in the 1950s and 1960s. Frank Cefai, a Maltese immigrant, is a well-known developer who has built thousands of homes in Greystanes and the surrounding suburbs.
