About Sydney

Sydney is the capital state of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located in Australia, Metropolis encircles Sydney Harbour on the east and extends approximately 70 km (43.5 miles) into the Blue Mountains to the west, Hawkesbury is in the north, and Royal National Park to the south.

Moreover, Sydney had a population of 4,823,991 according to the records of the 2016 census. Of this, 49.3% were men and 50.7% were women.

History of Sydney

It consisted of over a thousand settlers, including 736 convicts. The fleet soon went to the more suitable Port Jackson, where a settlement was found at Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788.

The colony of New South Wales was formally established and proclaimed by Governor Phillip on 7 February 1788. Governor Lachlan Macquarie (1810-1821) played a leading role in the development of Sydney and New South Wales by establishing a bank, currency, and hospital.

In the 1840s, Sydney showed a geographic divide between poor and working-class residents, who lived west of Tank Stream in areas like The Rocks, and most residents live to its east. Free settlers, freeborn residents, and ex-convicts now made up the vast majority of Sydney`s population, leading to increasing public agitation for good government and an end to transport.

The New South Wales government also encouraged growth by investing in railways, trams, roads, ports, telegraphs, schools, and town services. Moreover, the population of Sydney and its suburbs increased from 95,600 in 1861 to 386,900 in 1891. Besides, the city developed many of its distinctive features.

When the six colonies merged on January 1, 1901, Sydney became the state capital of New South Wales. "Garden suburbs" and mixed industrial and housing developments also grew along the rail and streetcar corridors.
